The tranquility, wholesomeness and privacy of country living can be deceptive. Over the years, I’ve heard many stories about paranormal and demonic activities in rural homes and isolated areas around the world. Demon possessed animals, adults and children; Haunted houses and barns and sightings of spirits walking down roads, across fields and through family-owned cemeteries.

Growing-up in a large family has its benefits and downfalls. In most cases–the children who grow-up in these families are made to triple and sometimes quadruple the sharing of one bed. It’s, truly, a crowded existence.

One story that I’d like to share with you, is about a young child that was forced to sleep in a double bed with four older sisters. She was a very petite child (much smaller than her age) so she did not require much space, in order to sleep with her big sisters. They, of course, had no problem with this and they actually did not have a choice. This was one of the house rules.

The old farm house was very cold upstairs, at night. The extra body heat from everyone else in the bed was a blessing in disguise, and sincerely appreciated. This child was instructed to lie between two of her sisters, at the foot of the bed. Each night was a carbon copy of the night before. But then one night, something different took place.

As the bed became covered with snowflakes, that were falling onto the bed from the leaky roof and cracked ceiling–the tossing and turning that the older sisters continuously did was keeping this young child awake. What seemed like hours began to trickle away. Eventually, exhausted and overwhelmed by sleep deprivation–the young girl, gradually, drifted off into a deep sleep.

A few short hours later–the young girl became, extremely, uncomfortable and upon awakening realized that she was no longer sleeping on the bed between her older sisters. It was, unusually, dark and there was something heavy lying on top of her. She attempted to move, but the weight of, whatever, it was that was holding her down was much too heavy for her to move. The darkness and the fear of the unknown was taking its toll on her. She began to scream and cry loudly. A few minutes later–the face of one of her sisters appeared through a narrow beam of light. She could not respond to her sister’s questions, because of fear. Her sister was asking her, how she managed to crawl between the mattress and the box spring on the bed. The young girl had no recollection of getting out of bed, doing such a strange and possibly dangerous act. As tiny as she was–she could have been suffocated by the weight of her older sisters.

The next morning, the entire family tried to figure out how something so odd could have taken place. They were left with no logical explaination. A few months later–the same strange mishap happened again. But this time, the young girl told her family, that she remebered being picked up by someone or something while she was asleep. She was left with the memory that she was dreaming. To this day, over 75 years later–noone has figured out how this young girl managed to get or was placed underneath that mattress with, at least, 400 pounds lying on top of it (from head to foot).
